The Future Cup Tool Wins Sustainability Award
Nestlé's out-of-home business, Nestlé Professional, has won a prestigious sustainability title for The Future Cup – Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Tool, awarded by the European Vending & Coffee Service Association (EVA)
This year’s EVA Vending Award for Sustainability recognizes Nestlé Professional’s commitment to help minimize the environmental impact of its coffee machines by supporting customers to make sustainable choices as well as influencing manufacturers’ designs. The EVA award categories attracted entries from across the European continent.
Patrick Stern, Head of Global Beverages at Nestlé Professional, said: “We are very proud to win this sustainability prize for the very first time.
“Our unique and innovative The Future Cup – LCA Tool has been developed to help our coffee customers choose machines in terms of their overall impact Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG), water usage, impact on resources, such as ecosphere and land use during the lifecycle of the machine.
“We aim to reduce our environmental impact through the design of our coffee machines by working with our manufacturers to cut the use of virgin plastic and improve machines’ energy efficiency. So, our aim is to help our customers run more sustainable operations and save them time and money through our coffee beverage solutions,” he added.
The Future Cup – LCA Tool
The tool, developed with the support of the environmental sustainability consultancy Quantis, aims to give transparency for the dispensed cup impact and help customers compare the carbon footprint impact of Nestlé Professional’s coffee solutions for its coffee brands, including Nescafé, Buondi and Zoegas.
Customers input information about their business such as the number of employees and the number of cups consumed into the tool. They then choose the machine model and type of coffee. With those inputs, the tool then calculates estimated CO2 equivalent emissions and feedback of four other measurements, including: impact on water scarcity, land use, impact on ecosphere, and resource use.
The tool reports the possible environmental impact of each measurement in three main sections. For example, under GHG emissions, customers can see the impact of cups, coffee and machines, respectively.
Additional Guidance
As many customers are increasingly looking for more sustainable and cost-efficient solutions, the tool also provides the projected energy bill based on how much electricity the coffee solution could use, in their local currency.
The Future Cup - Lifecycle Assessment Tool (based on ISO standard 14044:2006) contains the data for European countries and North America, Latin America and Asia – so customers can be sure that the information is tailored precisely for their region.
By highlighting the carbon footprint equivalent and energy bill for the various coffee solutions, they are then able to make informed choices between the different machine options to suit their business needs and sustainability goals.
