  • 01
  • Responsibly PLANTED & GROWN in Burundi

Burundi’s altitude, plentiful rainfall and moderate climate make it the ideal location for growing high-quality Arabica coffee beans, the country’s main export product. The production is a smallholder businesses with small lots produced by each farmer

  • 02
  • HARVESTING THE COFFEE CHERRIES

All coffee produced is picked by hand.  A kilo of harvested coffee cherries is made up of approximately 4000 cherries.

  • 03
  • PROCESSING THE COFFEE CHERRIES

Red, default-free, non-floating cherries are rigorously selected. They are then run through a McKinnon pulper, followed by a 12-hour fermentation. The coffee is then washed with cleaned water.

  • 04
  • The drying process

After the washing process, the coffee is graded down a canal at the end of which the parchment is collected and laid out on drying tables, under the sun, until it reaches a 10,5% humidity level.

  • 05
  • MILLING THE COFFEE BEANS

The beans, still in parchment, are now sent to the dry mill where the final sorting, grading and quality classification takes place before they are shipped to a buyer

  • 06
  • TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE

The green coffee is always sent via large ships and the time for shipping is approximately 4-7 weeks from the origin to the port of Helsingborg. Delivery times are slightly different depending on which country it originates from. Once the coffee arrives in Helsingborg, Nestlé tests the coffee before it is transported from the port to the factory.

  • 07
  • ROASTED BY EXPERTS

Roasting is a decisive factor that influences the final taste of coffee. It is therefore important to closely monitor not just the final color and time but rather the temperature curve changes during each roast cycle to achieve the right flavours and aromas in the end cup. We roast our coffee in 2 steps. The first step is done in our factories and the second step in our customers’ locations with the help or our micro batch roaster.
This is our way of ensuring consistently great tasting coffee and providing ultimate freshness for our customers.

  • 08
  • EXPERT CUPPING TASTINGS

The testing tasting process is a sensorial exercise which starts with smelling the natural aromas of the roasted ground coffee, then, with the addition of water, we smell the coffee while it infuses.

The tasting, or cupping as it is called in coffee language, is the heart of the production and the last step in a number of quality controls before the coffee reaches your coffee cup. We swirl a sip of air with the coffee to unlock all the aromas, characteristics and tastes.
